We’ve just said goodbye to 2014. As we march forward with the new year, we are greeted with pieces of advice from all places on how we could make our lives better. There are zodiac signs, feng shui, and even numerology to fill our wishes to see what the future may hold for us. Such insights to the future are nice to look out to but we are obliged to face the needs of the present and take control of it. To have a new year’s resolution is a great way of taking charge of the present while also being prepared for what’s ahead.
A resolution for a successful routine is key to setting habits that could change one’s behaviour effectively.
Setting a cue, routine, and reward is essential on forming a habit, whether it’d be eating, spending or just for the sake of reforming one’s way of thinking.
The Pope is a prominent figure even among younger generations for his ability to break through social customs and ward off any intimidation for his authority. He had the genuine touch of charisma wherever he goes and humility to boot with it. Truly, he is a role model who emanates the aura of deep reflection and progress.
Here are some words from his speeches which resonate perfectly with change:
People have to struggle to live and, frequently, to live in an undignified way. One cause of this situation, in my opinion, is in our relationship with money, and our acceptance of its power over ourselves and our society. (5/16/13)
7. Forgive Yourself From Financial Sins
Acceptance is key on knowing which problem needs to be solved and forgiving ourselves by letting go of our identification with the past prepares us for the greater things awaiting to be realized through our actions. The caretaking of the world is in our hands. By letting go of our mistakes and having the willingness for change, life is telling us everything would be okay.
Verses for reflection:
“ You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:22-24 (NIV)
Money must serve, not rule!
6. Win over your ends, Control your means
We were all taught at some point not to question but to simply obey what we were ordered to do. We’d even get to the point when this reaches the point of complacency. Passive acceptance leaves us with laziness and the incapability to drive our dreams forward.
By studying on our own how to properly manage the blessings we are betrothed with, we are making it work for our goodwill.
Verses for reflection:
“Any enterprise is built by wise planning, becomes strong through common sense, and profits wonderfully by keeping abreast of the facts.” Proverbs 24:3-4 (TLB)
The international business community can count on many men and women of great personal honesty and integrity, whose work is inspired and guided by high ideals of fairness, generosity and concern for the authentic development of the human family. I urge you to draw upon these great human and moral resources and to take up this challenge with determination and far-sightedness. Without ignoring, naturally, the specific scientific and professional requirements of every context, I ask you to ensure that humanity is served by wealth and not ruled by it. (1/17/14)
5. Find Security
Verses for reflection:
“The prudent see danger and take refuge,
but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” Proverbs 27:12 (NIV)
4. Keep the 1% Habit
Verses for reflection:
“On the first day of every week each one of you is to put aside and save, as he may prosper, so that no collections be made when I come.” Corinthians 16:2 (NIV)
I encourage you to multiply your efforts in the area of human promotion, so that every man and every woman can know the joy which comes from the dignity of earning their daily bread and supporting their family. (8/16/14, Laity)
3. Help your neighbour
Giving people the opportunity to use their talents on the other hand, is an engaging way of helping them get forward in life. Ask them to chip in with your side project/business or even chip in with existing ones near your area. Anything is possible.
Verses for reflection:
“To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:20-21(NIV)
“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Matthew 18:20 (NIV)
Today more than ever, I think it is necessary to educate ourselves in solidarity, to rediscover the value and meaning of this very uncomfortable word, which oftentimes has been left aside, and to make it become a basic attitude in decisions made at the political, economic and financial levels, in relationships between persons, peoples and nations. It is only in standing firmly united, by overcoming selfish ways of thinking and partisan interests, that the objective of eliminating forms of indigence determined by a lack of food will also be achieved. A solidarity that is not reduced to different forms of welfare, but which makes an effort to ensure that an ever greater number of persons are economically independent.” (10/16/13)
2. Always be ready for The Flood
Verses for reflection:
“Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.” Proverbs 6:6-8 (NIV)
1. Invest
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.” 2 Corinthians 9:6 (NIV)
Bonus: Be SMART
To have Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-sensitive goals on all the resolutions gives you an idea of the steps and the numbers you’d need to fill in order to achieve it.
An example would be, “I would be saving 20,000php in 10 months for my side project.”
As we take on 2015, we are drawn by our habits to trudge on with our old ways. It takes a desire for change to happen, an inner seeking for a more meaningful existence. And if you’d ever need more words to support your journey, take it from Pope Francis:
“Have the courage ‘to swim against the tide’. Have the courage to be happy.”
And he is right. Happiness takes work. May you have the virtue of courage and strive for it.

Your feet swell during running, as much as a full shoe size.
If the injury is not severe, the recovery should be fast.
Ill-fitting shoes may also cause pain because they tend to squeeze the foot,
causing the pressure inside the increase.
