Foreign Movies

Hollywood films have always innovated far than any other films in the world. With their CG animated and green screen technology, their Oscar-worthy story plots, cinematography and all of that film talks, it’s no wonder we still get to love watching the genres served to us by our foreign counterparts. Here are three of worthy foreign movies to watch that are still showing this December:

1) Moana

Video Source: Walt Disney Animation Studios

You’ll never doubt Disney, their magic always work!  Moana is slated to be bigger than Frozen, and watching the first Polynesian princess of Disney will make you agree! This is truly a must-see Disney princess movie that will empower the spirit of the young and the young at heart. The songs are definitely heart-catching and the story plot will give a ride of emotions that comes along with finding the purpose and following the heart’s ambition. Relive passion, determination, love of a family, and the beauty of the ocean and the tropical paradise through Moana!

2) Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

For all the wizarding fans of J.K.Rowling’s amazing Potterworld, the magical adventure of wizards, witchcraft, wands and fantastic beasts continues with “Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.”  The story will take you back 70 years before Harry Potter’s Hogwarts adventures. This movie is definitely worth the price for the forever Potterheads. So, catch the movie before they leave the movie houses.

3) Underworld Blood Wars

Video Source: Sony Pictures Entertainment

The saga of Kate Beckinsale’s Underworld franchise just gets bigger and bigger rivaling that of Resident Evil in terms of series. Now on its fifth instalment, this action-packed horror film between lycans (werewolves) and vampires is sure to give a heart-pumping thrill that’s enough to scare all the old year’s bad vibes away! 2012 was the last we’ve seen of Selene (Kate Beckinsale) from the Underworld: Awakening. Now with Blood Wars, expect more action, more blood, and more of the characters.

Mtetro Manila Film Festival Entries

This year’s 2016 MMFF entries announcement gave a big buzz as the official selection got a break from the usual Vic Sotto, Kris Aquino and Vice Ganda mainstream films. With different opinions about the change, still these films are set to play with our emotions this December 25.

1) Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 2: #ForeverIsNotEnough

Director: Marlon Rivera
Starring: Eugene Domingo, Jericho Rosales, Kean Cipriano, Khalil Ramos, and Cai Cortez
Written by Chris Martinez
Video Source: MMFF Official

The sequel to the hit 2011 comedy Indie film “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank” will make you laugh with the absurdities on the process of making a blockbuster film. With Eugene Domingo reprising the role as herself, the film retains its humorous standpoint on the juxtapose of profit versus art and the battle between indie versus commercial in the film industry. The trailer gives a highlight on the usual formula of a mainstream romantic film that Filipinos love to watch; the girl in the rain, the heavy driven heartbreaking lines, the supportive parents, the dashing leading man and the pain of how a beautifully inspired script gets edited into a commercially fed story.

2) Die Beautiful

Director: Jun Robles Lana
Starring: Paolo Ballesteros, Joel Torre, Gladys Reyes, Luis Alandy, Albie Casiño, Iza Calzado
Video Source: MMFF Official

Now, if you want to know the reason why Paolo Ballesteros won the coveted Best Actor and why the film nabbed the Audience Award at the 2016 Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), then better find out as Die Beautiful gets a slot on the MMFF entry! The film looks to emphasize how much the LGBT are mocked and accepted at the same time. There’s a lot of theatrics going on on the trailer and Paolo Ballesteros’ immense makeup skills are showcased and that’s just only a pint of the thespian juice from the actor. Still, there would be more to the story plot as the trailer ends with a strong statement that’s a meme-worthy line in he future: “A glamorous life deserves a fabulous death…”

3) Kabisera

Directors: Arturo San Agustin and Real Florido
Starring: Ms. Nora Aunor , Ricky Davao, ,JC De Vera,Luis Alandy, Jason Abalos,RJ Agustin
Video Source: MMFF Official

Inspired from a true story that will get you to realize that a perfect family is just like a picture, it tells a thousand words. Here we get a taste of the superb acting prowess of the the dame of Asian cinema, Nora Aunor. With her presence alongside award-winning actors makes the film heavy on drama. The story deals with a real-life deep-rooted problem faced by the family. The strength of a mother in the guise of Nora is seen keeping the light strong as the family plunge in darkness. Make this film a life lesson story to watch and find out how the family gets through with the unimaginable.

4) Oro

Director: Alvin Yapan
Starring: Irma Adlawan, Mercedes Cabral, and Joem Bascom

Video Source: MMFF Official

Oro means gold in Spanish, and based on true events, the film tackles gold farming in the rurals. This is a real heavy film that will make your eyebrows meet as it seems to be political emphasizing  greed and corruption, modernism and tradition and a whole lot more that’s seems enough to spark an activist spirit of the viewer.

5) Saving Sally

Director: Avid Liongoren
Starring: Rhian Ramos, Enzo Marcos
Video Source: Avid Liongoren

12 years in the making! Saving Sally is definitely a reminiscent that of the Oscar nominee 2014 film Boyhood, which surprisingly also took 12 years to make! Saving Sally looks such an artistic coming of age film that tells the story of  Marty (Enz Ramos) on a quest to save Sally (Rhian Ramos) and her heart from her monster parents and dick-headed boyfriend. Combining live action and animation, the film which started making in 2005, is going to give that retro romantic feelings on such a surreal Metro Manila backdrop.

6) Seklusyon

Director: Erik Matti
Starring: Rhed Bustamante, Phoebe Walker, Elora Espano, Neil Ryan Sese, Ronnie Alonte, Lou Veloso, Dominique Roque, John Vic De Guzman, JR Versales
Video Source: Pelikula Mania

Breaking from the usual mainstream horror films we get on previous Metro Manila Film Festivals, this film will bring chills even the dapper priests aren’t enough to comfort you. The film confronts religion and superstition and it also reminds you that of the horrific tales from exorcism. So, if you want a wide-eyed surprise to shock you this Christmas, then “Seklusyon” is the film that gets you stuck on the movie seats.

7) Sunday Beauty Queen

Director: Babyruth Villarama Gutierrez
Starring: Hazel Perdido, Cherrie Mae Bretana, Mylyn Jacobo, Leo Selomenio, Rudelyn Acosta
Video Source: MMFF Official

With films that make you laugh, make you wonder, make you love, make you cry, and make you scream, here’s something that will truly make you inspired. This docu-film is a film that shares the strength of our modern day heroes, our Overseas Filipino Workers. It takes us on the world of our loving Professional Domestic Helpers in one of the key cities in Asia, Hong Kong. It’s a film that marvels with the honest lifestyle of our fellow Filipinos. With Sunday Beauty Queen, you are guaranteed to understand the real meaning of sacrifice, of being away from home and of the gift of giving.

8) Vince and Kath and James

Director: Ted Boborol
Starring: Julia Barretto, Joshua Garcia, Ronnie Alonte

Video Source: ABS-CBN Star Cinema

It is a cold season, but warm your hearts out with this cheesy and teenage milleneal puppy love film! It flutters with butterflies in your stomach as it reminds us of that text messaging days, those torpe feelings, our cliche’ relationship stories that we used to be head over heels in high school, and all the twitterpated feelings this viral online romantic story is based from. So expect to remember the feelings of infatuation, of getting smitten, of those ugly heartaches, of the sad hopia from Vince and Kath and James this Christmas.
